Soft Coat Low-E Double Glazing: Glen Waverley Sports Hub

The Glen Waverley Sports Hub stands as a benchmark in modern community sporting infrastructure — designed with high-performance, sustainability, and user experience in mind. SMB Windows supplied and installed a full suite of commercial-grade, thermally broken windows and doors glazed with Cooling Brothers InsulCool Ultra Pro Double Glazing. A soft coat Low-E, InsulCool Ultra Pro is configured specifically for cold weather Australian climates, delivering high performance thermal outcomes throughout winter and summer months.
The new Glen Waverly Sports Hub features an impressive array of amenities, comprising a regional-level tennis venue with 18 courts and two showcourts. The multisport pavilion caters to both tennis and golf enthusiasts, with additional enhancements including golf practice facilities, public open spaces, ample parking, a café, and essential supporting infrastructure. The tennis centre will host tournaments, replacing the existing tennis centre in Boroondara.
Mantric Architecture, responsible for the design of major sports and recreation projects like the Glen Eira Sports and Aquatic Centre (GESAC) in Bentleigh East and the State Basketball Centre in Wantirna South, delivered the project. Mantric has extensive experience collaborating with councils and sporting organisations on projects such as the Duncan MacKinnon Sports Pavilion in Murrumbeena, the Bendigo Tennis Centre, and the Tatterson Park Sports Pavilion in Keysborough.

The centre is exclusively glazed with InsulCool UltraPro double glazing within SMB Windows commercial grade thermally broken framing system. Designed specifically for cool Australian climates, InsulCool UltraPro uses a soft coat Low-E to balance maximum SHGC and U-Value performance throughout winter months.
InsulCool UltraPro: Soft Coat Low-E Double Glazing for cool climate performance
Designed for the cold climates of Victoria and Tasmania, InsulCool UltraPro double-glazed units feature a highly specific soft coat Low E coating. This coating minimises radiant heat transfer while allowing an optimal amount of SHGC for passive heating during the coldest winter months.
To maximise performance, UltraPro IGUs are manufactured using the Quanex superspacer – a thermally broken warm edge thermoplastic spacer (TPS). Warm edge spacers are made of composite materials and extruded via CNC. This combination of composite material and manufacturing technology results in a spacer with the lowest possible thermal conductivity.
In supplying double glazing into to construction projects, it is common practice for product specifications to be changed to reduce budget, often at the expense of quality and after-sales support. Unfortunately, the impact of this is only usually apparent long into a building’s lifespan when issues typically arise. SMB Windows together with Commercial Industrial Construction Group (CICG) remained loyal to the original glass specification, ensuring a consistent design and glazing outcome efficiently and risk-free.
Cooling Brothers partnered with AGC Glass to supply glazing to meet the 5 Star Green Star ESD requirements of the project. From a glazing perspective, this involved specifying glass to meet or exceed a U value of 1.4 and SHGC of 0.35. InsulCool UltraPro 72 provided an ideal performance match for the project (1.35, 0.35).

The Glen Waverley Sports Hub is a perfect example of how glazing design and performance can come together to elevate community facilities with improved comfort, aesthetics, and sustainability. Key areas of glazing SMB Windows provided into the project included:
- Dual-Colour Doors and Frames
The framing system features a bold black exterior with grey door panels, creating a striking 30% contrast that adds to the building’s modern aesthetic. - Thermally Broken Windows and Doors
Energy efficiency and comfort were a key priority. All windows and doors are thermally broken to improve thermal performance and reduce energy consumption. - Automatic Awning Windows
Located on the first floor, these motorised awning windows allow for effective natural ventilation and indoor climate control. - Sashless Double Hung Windows
Installed at the ticketing counter, these windows combine seamless visibility with ease of use and modern design. - Curved Windows to the Viewing Area
The viewing area features custom curved glazing, offering unobstructed sight lines and a contemporary feel. - Large Feature Window
A stunning 4m x 3m window made of 10mm double-glazed glass enhances natural light and visibility in the viewing area, creating a strong visual impact. - Curtain Wall at the Entrance
A full-height curtain wall system welcomes visitors with a grand, open feel while ensuring energy efficiency and structural strength. - Bifold Doors
Flexible bifold doors offer seamless indoor-outdoor access for multi-purpose use. - Automatic Sliding Doors
These provide convenient, hands-free entry while maintaining thermal efficiency.

"It’s a pleasure to work with a team that is truly supportive of holding the spec and committed to local supply. It makes a huge difference for all parties - Cooling Brothers can deliver InsulCool UltraPro double glazing as specified, so the architect and client receive the designed outcome in its full intent."
