What types of curved glass are available in Australia?

Curved glass is typically available as toughened (tempered), laminated, annealed, or double-glazed (IGU) units. Depending on the application, manufacturers like Bent & Curved Glass offer a wide range of radii, glass thicknesses, coatings (including Low-E), and edge treatments.

What is the minimum and maximum radius for curved glass?

The minimum bend radius depends on the glass type, thickness, and curving method. For toughened glass, minimum radii typically range from 500mm to 1000mm, while annealed or laminated glass can achieve tighter curves. Maximum panel sizes are determined by furnace capacity, Bent and Curved Glass produce curved glass panels up to 3800 x 2400mm.

Can curved glass be double-glazed or include Low-E coatings?

Yes. Curved glass can be fabricated as part of a double-glazed IGU and include soft coat Low-E coatings, achieving excellent thermal performance and solar control. This is commonly used in commercial facades and high-performance residential projects seeking to meet NCC energy efficiency standards.

What are the common applications for curved glass in architecture?

Curved glass is widely used in:

  • Commercial façades and curtain walls
  • Balustrades and atriums
  • Entryways and revolving doors
  • Glass canopies and skylights
  • Staircases, lobbies, and feature wallsIt’s also common in public infrastructure, retail architecture, and transport projects requiring bespoke curved forms.

Can curved glass be custom printed or include decorative treatments?

Absolutely. Curved glass can incorporate digital ceramic printing, coloured interlayers, or textured laminates. Technologies like ImagInk or Digiglass can be combined with curved panels to deliver striking architectural features while maintaining durability and compliance.

Is curved glass compliant with Australian Standards (AS1288, AS4666)?

Yes. Curved glass must be manufactured and tested in accordance with AS1288 (Glass in Buildings – Selection and Installation) and where applicable, AS4666 (Insulating Glass Units). Leading suppliers provide NATA-accredited testing and can offer full compliance documentation to satisfy certifiers, builders, and regulatory bodies.
